HOW TO MAKE FOOD SYSTEMS INCREASINGLY SUSTAINABLE?
THE KEY CHALLENGE LAUNCHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SIENA FOR THE MILLENNIALS LAB 2017
The second edition of the Millennials Lab has been focused on Food & Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean, which took place in Siena from May 19th to 21st.
This was an initiative from the University of Siena | SIYLAB Project and the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), in cooperation with the BCFN- Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition, the Monte dei Paschi Foundation and with the support of the Future Food Institute.
The Lab brought together a dynamic group of 25 Euro-Mediterranean Millennials: passionate young professionals, experts, researchers, students with mixed backgrounds and knowledge willing to exchange their views on 3 key challenges we face in making food systems increasingly sustainable at different scale:
|1||FOOD AND TERRITORIES
What impact do local food systems have on our planet and what can millennials do in order to improve their sustainability? What is the relation between food and territories and what can millennials do in order to rebuild it? What policies should the millennial’s generation advocate for and what should a sustainable Food Policy Act look like?
|2||CAP – COMMON AGRICULTURAL POLICY
In February 2017 the European Commission launched a three-month public consultation on the future of the common agricultural policy (CAP). How can the Commission use the input from Millennials to redefine agricultural policy priorities for the future in response to existing social, political, environmental and economic challenges? What are the areas in which EU countries could do more to support food sustainability, each of which provides a potential pointer towards future CAP priorities?
Whatever the question may be in regards to food sustainability, cooperation in research and innovation is always part of the answer. Through the PRIMA Initiative – Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean more than 20 countries of the Mediterranean basin are now gathering together to reinforce it. How can Euro-Mediterranean millennials influence this process?
WORKING TABLES & OUTPUTS
Each macro-issue corresponded to a working table of the Lab, which has been facilitated by the presence of mentors and advisors. The objective was to come up with outputs that were presented during the closing session.
This was intended to be the first step of a broader reflection on the issue of food sustainability that will lead to the 2nd edition of the Siena Millennials Festival the 5th and 6th of October and to the 8th International Forum on Food and Nutrition organized by the BCFN – Barilla Center for food and Nutrition in Milan from the 4th to the 5th of December 2017.
